PISM Berlin Fireside Chats is a new recurring format of the PISM Berlin Office, dedicated to conversations with distinguished authors, experts, and journalists in international politics. The initiative aims to create a space for a more in-depth, while at the same time more informal, discussion of key challenges facing Europe and the international order.

The format is launched with a conversation with Dr. Jana Puglierin, Head of the Berlin Office and Senior Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), author of the book “Wer verteidigt Europa?”.

The conversation centers on her analysis of Europe’s evolving security landscape in the wake of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, set against a broader backdrop of intensifying great-power rivalry and mounting geopolitical tensions. It explores how Europe can preserve its capacity to act in an era of strategic uncertainty—particularly as the role of the United States evolves, the future of NATO comes into question, and the need for credible European defense capabilities becomes increasingly urgent. A central element of the discussion is also the role of Germany in shaping the future of Europe’s security architecture.
