Mexico’s View of the Global Order

On 2 June 2023, the Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM), in cooperation with the Embassy of Mexico in Poland, organised a closed-door expert seminar entitled: "Mexico's View of the Global Order" with the participation of Professor Jorge Schiavon of the Mexican Centre for Development and Economic Research (CIDE). Justyna Szczudlik, PISM Deputy Head of Research, and Juan Sandoval Mendiolea, Ambassador of Mexico, opened the event. Next, Professor Schiavon delivered an introductory speech on Mexico's foreign policy, including its relationship with the US and ways to strengthen its international position. The seminar continued with a discussion on Mexico's position on multilateral cooperation, including the reform of the UN Security Council, the importance of Mexico's membership of the MIKTA group, as well as its stance on BRICS and the idea of multipolarity. Mexican position on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, on the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) relationship with the European Union, as well as the importance of the concepts of nearshoring and friendshoring for Mexico were other questions raised.

Bio of the speaker:

Jorge Alberto Schiavon Uriegas is Professor of international relations at the International Studies Department, CIDE (Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas), Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Program on Migration at CIDE (CIDE-MIG), and President of CIDE Foundation. He holds a Ph.D. in political science and international affairs and a master's in political science from the University of California, San Diego, a bachelor's in international relations from el Colegio de México, and a diploma in public international law from The Hague Academy of International Law, International Court of Justice.

He has authored and edited 17 academic books and more than 100 articles and chapters on Mexican foreign policy, history of Mexican international relations, migration, sub-state diplomacy (paradiplomacy); public opinion and foreign policy; regional integration in Latin America and North America; institutions, decentralization, and federalism in Latin America and North America; U.S.-Mexico-Canada relations and hemispheric Latin American relations; and Mexican, North American, and Latin American political systems and foreign policies. His most recent book is Comparative Paradiplomacy (New York, Routledge, 2019).
